Cemex, Carib Cement’s global parent company, announces the launch of the 4th edition of the Cemex Campus across five of its operating countries in the Caribbean – Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, and the Bahamas.
Initially launched in 2021, this programme was designed to provide opportunities for young and upcoming professionals to gain valuable insight into the building materials manufacturing industry, incorporating both theoretical and practical components to complement their academic education.
Speaking at the recently held launch in Trinidad & Tobago, and streamed ‘live’ to Carib Cement’s Rockfort facility, Cemex’s Regional President for South, Central America, and the Caribbean, Mr. Jesus Gonzalez reiterated the company’s commitment to building a better, more sustainable future for all. He remarked, “Initiatives like these enable us to cultivate mutually beneficial relationships that play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our society.” Mr. Gonzalez invited participants to embark on the journey with Cemex, encouraging them to make the most of the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge in the best interest of their careers.
Carib Cement’s Chairman, Mr. Parris A. Lyew-Ayee CD., commended the students present for participating in the programme. He added, “It is not something that you will regret. It will prepare you for the next stage of your professional career. You need to be ‘work-ready’ to appreciate the demands that are required of you out there. We need to ensure that you are properly trained. We need people with the right attitude and problem-solving abilities.”
The Cemex Campus combines lectures from the company’s experts with some practical exposure in a range of areas including manufacturing processes, construction solutions and technologies, engineering, sustainability, procurement, finance, auditing, human resource, marketing, and social impact.
Students attending the ‘live’ streamed launch and “meet and greet” session at Carib Cement’s facility expressed their excitement to participate in the programme over the next 9 weeks, and equally, their appreciation for the opportunity to engage with Cemex executives, managers, and other professionals, who were happy to share their expert advice, experience, and encouragement.
Since its inception in 2021, over two hundred tertiary students across the Caribbean have benefitted from the Cemex Campus in a range of relevant disciplines. This year, the company will partner with a record ten regional universities including the University of the West Indies’ campuses at Mona, Jamaica; Cave Hill, Barbados; and St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago; the Government Technical Institute of Guyana, the University of Trinidad and Tobago, the MIC Institute of Technology of Trinidad and Tobago, the University of the Bahamas, and the Caribbean Maritime University, the University of Technology, and the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean in Jamaica.
