The Caribbean Cement Company Limited under the distinguished Patronage of the Most. Hon. Andrew Holness, ON, MP, Prime Minister of Jamaica, hosted, the grand Opening of its Sports Club and Wellness Center, on Thursday, 8th September 2016 at 6:00 pm.
The event was an exciting one, with several members of the private sector, customers, various stakeholders and government officials in attendance.
The Sports Club and Wellness Centre located at Jamaica Gypsum Quarry Port, Harbour Head, Rockfort, has its unique place in Jamaica’s rich history as it was once home to Jamaica’s first Sea Plane Airport, where Charles Lindbergh, The famous aviator and explorer, landed in November 1931.
In the restoration of the facility Carib Cement replicated the original designs and incorporated the use of several of the building’s longstanding structures, while adding amenities of modern era.
The Sports Club and Wellness Centre will serve as a full mind and body development facility for employees and members of the Carib Cement Family. The Wellness Centre is equipped with a state of the art Gym, recreational areas, multipurpose courts and lounge areas.
Speaking at the function the Prime Minster commended Carib Cement for the over US$800,000 investment in the facility and by extension the development of its entire staff. The Prime Minister commented that this investment by Carib Cement fits uniquely into the GOJ overall development plan for the Palisadoes to Downtown Humming Bird corridor. He went further to state that this should form the basis for other private sector firms to invest in the further development of historic buildings from Kingston into St Catherine to strengthen the local tourism product which will see the return of cruise ships to the capital city and Port Royal.
Speaking on the behalf of Carib Cement, General Manager Mr. Alejandro Vares spoke of the new Carib Cement which he along with the Board of Directors are seeking to create. He made mention of the genesis of the project and the philosophy of Carib Cement in creating healthy and whole employees. According to Mr. Vares the focus will be on the three main pillars, Mind, Body and Financial health of the employees.
The night’s event also included a historical Presentation by Mr. Ainsley Henriques, a staff Endorsement for the Sports Club and Wellness Center by Mr. Andrew Thomas as well as an overview of the project by the main contractors. The event was concluded with the cutting of the ribbon by The Most. Hon. Andrew Holness, O.N, M.P. & Mr. Alejandro Vares, General Manager. The Nights entertainment was provided by the Fab 5 Band.
